Top Ten Tuesday Freebie: Top 10 Caldecott & Newbery Favorites

*Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish*

This week’s Top 10 is a freebie!  I’m curious to see what others post about.  Here are my favorite Caldecott and Newbery winners.  I went with the just the winners, not the honor books.  If I went with the honor books, this post would quickly turn into a tirade…

Top 10 Caldecott & Newbery Favorites

Caldecott

Not My Hat

1.) This Is Not My Hat- Jon Klassen

This won the year (2013) I participated in my first (and so far only) Mock Caldecott Workshop.  Charming and humorous.

Wild Things

2.) Where The Wild Things Are– Maurice Sendak

A classic.  I remember Ms. Belinda Jones reading it during library time in elementary school, and wanted to sail away in my own boat.  Let the wild rumpus start!

Amos McGee

3.) A Sick Day for Amos McGee– Written by Phillip C. Stead, Illustrated by Erin E. Stead

Oh my heart!  This is just the most precious and kind and warm story.  The illustrations make it such a happy little book.  And I adore the penguin in socks.

Kitten

4.) Kitten’s First Full Moon– Kevin Henkes

Black and white and perfect all over.

Polar Express

5.) The Polar Express– Chris Van Allsburg

A holiday classic.  It was read to my first grade class and we all received a bell.  This book was also published the year I was born.

Newbery

Dead End

6.) Dead End in Norvelt– Jack Gantos

I love Jack Gantos.  This book had me laughing the entire time.

Manifest

7.) Moon Over Manifest– Clare Vanderpool

The writing is gorgeous and the story extremely touching.

The Giver

8.) The Giver– Lois Lowry

I read this in Ms. Daphne Wilson’s G/T Reading class in the seventh grade and it rocked me to the core.  Absolute perfection.

Number the Stars

9.) Number the Stars– Lois Lowry

Another wonderful book by Lowry.  A great story with compelling characters.

Julie

10.) Julie of the Wolves– Jean Craighead George

Julie and her story of survival have always stuck with me.  Again, just great writing.
